One supplier who cannot pass the blame
The most expensive situation in small-business IT is having four suppliers and no owner. The network company says it is the server. The server company says it is the internet line. The developer says the hosting is throttling them. Meanwhile the business cannot invoice, and every one of those suppliers is billing for the time they spend proving it is not their fault.
We offer these four areas together because in practice they are one system. The reason a learning platform is slow is often not the platform at all; it is a saturated uplink, an unpatched server or a backup job running at the wrong hour. When the same people are responsible for the cabling, the server, the hosting and the application, that question gets answered in an afternoon instead of over three weeks of email.
It also means the design decisions line up. Infrastructure gets sized for what the software is actually going to do. Security is built into how the system is deployed instead of bolted on afterwards by someone who was not told how it works. Backups are tested against a real restore of a real system, not assumed.
None of this requires you to buy everything at once. Most clients start with the one thing that is currently hurting, a failing server, a network that drops, a platform that needs rebuilding, and add the rest as budgets and renewal dates allow. What matters is that the roadmap is coherent, so this year's spend is not written off by next year's decision.
What the first month usually looks like
Every environment is different, but the shape of an engagement is fairly consistent, and knowing it in advance makes the first conversation more productive.
Assessment
We walk the site or connect remotely and document what is actually there, which is frequently not what the documentation says. Hardware and its age, how the network is laid out, what is being backed up and whether those backups have ever been restored, which systems are still supported, and where the single points of failure sit. You get that inventory whether or not you go ahead with us.
Costed roadmap
Findings come back as a prioritised list, separated into what is genuinely urgent, what should be planned for this year, and what can reasonably wait. Each item carries a cost and a plain explanation of the risk of leaving it. That separation matters, because it lets you spend on the two things that actually reduce risk instead of the ten a supplier would like to sell you.
Deploy & support
Agreed work is scheduled around your operating hours, because cutovers belong on a Saturday morning and not on month-end. Once it is running we can keep it running under a managed agreement with monitoring and a defined response time, or simply stay available on an hourly basis if that suits you better. Both are legitimate, and we will tell you which one your situation actually justifies.
Questions we are asked before signing anything
Are we too small for you?
Almost certainly not. A large share of our work is with organisations of five to fifty people who have no internal IT and cannot justify hiring for it. The whole premise of the business is delivering the kind of setup a corporate would have, at a size and price that makes sense well below that.
Do we have to replace everything?
No, and we will usually argue against it. Working hardware that is doing its job is not a problem to be solved. We would far rather extend what you have and spend the budget on the specific weak points, than sell a clean sweep that resets your institutional knowledge along with your equipment.
What if we already have a supplier?
That is common and it is not a problem. We regularly work alongside an existing provider, take over one part of an estate, or give a second opinion on a quote someone is unsure about. If your current supplier is doing good work we will say so; there is no benefit to us in a client who was talked into switching.
Who owns what you build?
You do. Your data is yours, and systems we build for you are documented so that another competent provider could pick them up. We would rather keep clients because they want to stay than because leaving would be painful, and lock-in tends to be a sign a supplier has stopped competing on merit.
